Immanuel Lutheran School functioned as the only school environment that I encountered until I enrolled as a freshman at Giddings High School. All of my experiences and beliefs up to that point in my life would soon be challenged. Many new things about myself would be revealed to me and others in a very short time. Adjustments had to be made. These adjustments needed to be made quickly in order to have any sort of pleasant experience in high school. When I was three years old, I began school life at Immanuel. Immanuel encommpasses a predominantly Anglo, Christian environment. It is also a very small school with an average class of size of around 15 students. Understanding that everyone is different and has different beliefs served as a major lesson for my life. I started to accept other people’s beliefs, but continued to try to spread God’s word throughout the school, as I had been taught at Immanuel. The transition proved to be very difficult at times. I encountered people with problems that I had never experienced first hand. These problems included drinking or drugs, confusion over sexuality, suicidal thoughts, and loss. I recognized that everyone has difficulties in life, but mine were just different. God used these experiences to show me that spreading his word to people could help them. The thing that helped me through this time the most was my faith. God gave me the strength to fight the internal battles I was experiencing. I realized that God put me at this place and at this time for His ultimate purpose. I convinced myself that I should help everyone learn the power of God’s word. I still do not understand why some do not believe in God. However, I continue to treat them with the love, forgiveness, compassion, and acceptance that I was taught at Immanuel.
