Lynn J Good throughout her years of being CEO for Duke Energy has painted a picture of what it means to be a strategic leader. Through times of challenge and in times of triumph, she has proven to be the face for determination, commitment, and passion. Not only does she have the core abilities of what a strategic leader must encompass like flexibility, being a team player, and having the eyes for change, she has continued to practice the key dimensions of strategic leadership. Through her time as CEO she has continually determined the organization’s purpose and vision, created a strong organizational culture, and practices ethical decision.

In her first seven months a spill that was deemed catastrophic and made many characterize Duke Energy as “lax, and lawless, when it came to the environment. And acted like a bully with state regulators,” which was revealed in a steamy interview of Good on CBS News (Stahl, 2015). This all fell on Good, with her being the CEO. During this period, Good’s actions and response characterized the two dimensions of being a strategic leader: emphasizing ethical decisions and practices and creating and sustaining strong organizational culture. Instantly she set to work to stop the leak and prevent others from happening instead of just covering it up. Marc Feigen, a veteran advisor to top business leaders stated that “rare in my experience have I seen a CEO face so much so soon and deliver outstanding results so quickly” (Tully, 2014). With such strong laws posed against her line of work, she has taken initiatives to switch from coal and adopt a more environmentally-stable solar and gas plants. As found on Duke Energy’s website, they are committed to honest and integrity and holding everyone to the highest standards. She has promoted and created a strong organizational culture by sticking to these core values. Good, in her personal life and in her employees, relies on passion. She believes, especially leadership, must have three key qualities: passion, courage and perspective.
