Mandy Lee was born in Calgary on October 8th, 1993, and became a foster child at the age of five years old due to parental substance abuse and issues of neglect. Growing up, she was placed in multiple foster homes and was situated in group homes at the age of sixteen. She currently resides in Downtown Calgary with her boyfriend and is currently attending Bow Valley College in an attempt to finish her high school courses. Mandy has one brother who is nine years older (Doyen) and one younger sister who was given up for adoption at birth. When she was four years old, she was sexually abused by her brother, and he would bribe her chocolates in exchange for sexual favors. When she is not in any relationship, she would go to clubs to meet new people. She does not smoke or take drugs, but sometimes she would do so with her friends to gain acceptance in the group and uphold her cool image. Currently, she is in a relationship with her boyfriend of one year and eight months. Their relationship is a coercive relationship, and would often break up and get back together. The reason for their rocky relationship is that Mandy's boyfriend is controlling and abusive; however, Mandy does not want to leave the relationship because she does not want to be alone, she has nowhere to go and does not have any money to support her. Substance Abuse Currently, Mandy Lee twenty-three years old and is a heavy drinker, she drinks almost every other day to repressed her memories and her fights with her boyfriend. When Mandy is drunk, her behaviors become erratic. She becomes aggressive, loud, and violent; she would sometimes initiate the fight with whomever. She is an occasional drug user and would much prefer to drink. She admitted to using Marijuana, Cocaine, and Ecstasy. It is evident that genetics as well maltreatment received during childhood play a crucial role in the development of criminal behavior (Brown et al., 2017). The MAOA gene is responsible for breaking down neurotransmitters which are heavily linked to aggression and various form of antisocial behavior. Low activity of MAOA gene combine with environmental factors such as maltreatment (physical, sexual, emotional abuse and neglect) is most likely associated with all four measures of antisocial behavior (Brown et al., 2017). Mandy’s poor diet due to massive consumption of alcohol may have resulted in low activity of MAOA gene. Combined with maltreatment that she experienced and currently suffering from her boyfriend’s abuse may have had contributed to all four measure of antisocial behavior.
