The character’s in my book are very asociated with power and where they stand in the Empire. All these character’s have different levels of power. For example some of these characters that come to mind. Laia has the least power is a past slave scholar which isn’t very high in rank. Then Elias was a former mask who is now a “traitor” of the Empire.
Discrimination can arise when arriving in a new country/area, or by simply having a gender that is not preferred in the dominant society. Consequently, it may result in one left feeling unappreciated or unequal. When discrimination occurs, one may choose to fight back or stand by and allow anything to be said and done. Night by Ellie Wiesel explores Eliezer's experience with discrimination first hand by presenting his remarkable self control, and patience while viewing harm being done to his father. Similarly, in Disappearing Moon Cafe by Sky Lee, Mui Lan patiently deals with the discrimination she faces at the hand of her own her own government.
It is true that words can have just as much power as action when used in a strong, meaningful
Abuse of power goes all the way back 100 years ago or even more. Richard Peck depicts the conflict, abuse of power, in his short story “Priscilla and the wimps”. Monk , a gang leader, is running his school like it’s his garden of eden, but e picks on the wrong kid. Then he dies. Peck tells monk’s journey to show that abuse of power has consequences.
In Of Mice and Men and Maggie, a Girl of the Streets, John Steinbeck and Stephen Crane describe differing roles of power. In Of Mice and Men, power comes from the male workers respecting the leadership Slim demonstrates but the fear Curley brings also plays a part in having power from the men. In Maggie, a Girl of the Streets, Maggie has a false image of Pete, believing him to be sophisticated and of a higher station in life. Maggie is allowing herself to give Pete more power than he deserves. With contrasting views of power, Steinbeck demonstrates power through the men honoring Slim’s leadership and fearing Curley, while Crane displays power through Maggie’s false perspective of Pete.
Freedom and confinement are not two words commonly found together, but in "Night" by Ellie Wiesel this is a reoccurring theme. This novel is built off of the hope and fight for freedom and the reality of imprisonment. Wiesel explains his first-hand account on the strive for freedom, the truth of confinement, and the hurt of the life after. At the beginning of the novel confinement and captivity are very prominent, of course at this time there is no pure liberty for the Jews.
All books that young adults read have power. Their power results in their ability to sway and to change the reader in so many ways, not the least of these is morally. These books can create a moral sense in the young by demonstrating what is morally right and what is morally wrong. They can raise and resolve ethical issues. The reader may not agree with each resolution, but is certainly forced to think about issues he or she may never have thought about before (Smith 63).
Language is not a significant part of a person’s character and importance. Many influential men and women of history dealt with speaking impediments and came from uneducated backgrounds. Some of these historical figures include Sojourn Truth, Sir Isaac Newton, and Winston Churchill. Sojourn Truth was born a slave during the late 1700s, she was never taught to read or write and spoke with a deep uneducated accent, but despite this though she became an activist. Sojourner became famous for her speech on human rights’, the abolishing slavery, and women’s right, one of her most famous and well known speeches was, “Aint’ I A Women.”
For he declared that “It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than speak out and remove all doubt”. Lincoln illustrates that the less that is being spoken the more ahead that person is. When speaking without thinking, it often leads to saying things that weren't meant to be said. Silent people observe by listening to what is being argued so that when they get a chance to speak they can voice what they were thinking. People argue that the quiet people are the ones that don't think.
In her novel, E. Lockhart uses the abundance of indirect characterization to reveal the theme of power. Throughout the book, Grandpa rules over his daughters to see which one will make an effort to show just how much they want to inherit his island. In chapter 63, you see the children helping their parents win over granddad by flattering him about how great the island is. "When I told granddad how much I adored the house, he smiled and said he knew someday I'd have beautiful children. Then he said Bess was a grasping wench and he had no intentions of giving her my house.
“Nothing is Impossible to a Determined Woman” Looking back into the 1800s the role of women was very simple, they took care of the children, the house and the husband. They cooked, cleaned, sewed and taught the girls how to be a good wife and mother one day. Once women were married that was their life, they could not own any property and if they did they would have to give it to their husband. However, if you were unmarried; you could own property, sue people or in fact even be sued. If you were not married a very popular occupation during this time was to be a Civil War nurse.
In order to clearly understand what Hannah Arendt wants to convey the interrelation between power and law, it is important to clarify what the separation of powers are. “Separation of powers” is regarded as a model to govern the state and it is the vital sphere of government. In addition, separation of powers can be referred as the main institutions of state which has functioned autonomously and no one or any institutions are able to have power over these institutions. According to the doctrine of Separation of powers, it can be divided into three branches – the executive, the legislature, and the judiciary- where each branch has separable and independent powers from each other , therefore, one of the power of these three branches cannot
“Then wear that gold hat, if that will move her; If you can bounce high, bounce for her too, Till she cry “Lover, gold-hatted, high bouncing lover, I must have you” (title page). Throughout the novel, the Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald presents Tom Buchanan as a very controlling person who believes he is entitled to many things because of his wealth. Similar to the quote, Tom’s constant need for wealth and power leads to a need and want for everything in sight. If a reader were to read this book through the Marxist lens, they would see an obvious struggle between the powerful and powerless and how that directly coincides with how much money the person with power has. The main character with power and wealth in the novel is Tom Buchanan, and he uses his control to gain power over others.
“Words are singularly the most powerful force available to humanity. We can choose to use this force constructively with words of encouragement, or destructively using words of despair. Words have energy and power with the ability to help, to heal, to hinder, to hurt, to harm, to humiliate and to humble.” -Yehuda Berg. Words are an important part to everyday life.
