In “All Summer in a Day,” the children are thriving to see the sun, they would even be happy to just remember what the sun looks and feels like against their snowflake white skin. Margot, on the other hand does remember the sun and often talks about the bright light bulb that lights their planet once every seven years, to the others. However, there is a turning point when the children become jealous and treat Margot differently because to them she is set apart from them. ‘Hey, everyone, let’s put her in a closet before the teacher comes!’” The main character Margot and her classmates live on Venus. The book Margot by Jillian Cantor depicts this scenario. Once Margot Frank in a past life, Margie Franklin has accumulated a seemingly simple American life in Philadelphia during post World War II.
Margot is also depressed about not seeing to sun and living in a sense of her own world as well. According to All Summer in a Day, “she would play no games with them in the echoing tunnels of the underground city” (Bradbury, 2). She is showing more and more signs of
Jealousy is shown throughout the quote “And then, of course, the biggest crime of all was she had come here only five years ago from Earth, and she remembered the sun and the way the sun was and the sky was when she was four in Ohio. And they, they had been on Venus all of their lives, and they had been only two years old when last the sun came out and had long since forgotten the color and heat of it and the way it really was. But Margot remembered” (Bradbury 27). This shows why the other kids in Margot’s class dislike her. This ends up leading to the other kids locking her in the closet when the sun comes.
It was Thursday May 5, 1938 my friend Margot and I were walking home from school. As we approached our apartment building we saw two nazis soldiers standing outside of Margot’s house. Margot looked at me and said “Who are those men and why are they talking to my parents?” I looked at her and said “They are at your house because your family is jewish and they are most likely giving your parents the yellow stars that you have to sew onto your clothes. Its the star of David you have to wear so the soldiers know that you a jew.”
However, some may say that her classmate’s actions were driven by jealousy. But in the end, the story puts more focus on Margot not fitting in and not being accepted. The most efficient ways to respond to conflict are through a positive attitude, perseverance, and resilience. It is important to understand why problems occur, so they can be easily resolved. The theme of the story about bullying and jealousy. When someone new comes to a school who is different from others, children as a group together will tend to pick on, mistreat, beat up, bully that the new child. Then, when you have a child who has vivid ideas&memories of the things that the other children have not experienced like in this story “All Summer in a Day” reference to the sun, children will be jealous of what she has and they do not. I think in this story all Margot wanted is to share what she remembers of the sun, and for that, she is looked down on by William and the other children, being out right mean to her. So when the suns starts to appear, they lock Margot in the closet, as if to say we want it
