Jealousy In 'All Summer In A Day'

“They are jealous of the person you are not who you aren't” (anonymous). This quote relates to the short story “All Summer in a day” by Ray Bradburry and "The Necklace” by Guy de Maupassant. In the story “The Necklace” the main character Madame Mathilde Loisel experiences jealousy through the party that her husband got her tickets to. She was jealous because she got invited to the ball yet, and did not have anything to wear including jewelry. She borrowed a necklace from Madame Forestier because she wants to fit into high society because she is so desperate to fit in. Jealousy is shown throughout the quote “And then, of course, the biggest crime of all was she had come here only five years ago from Earth, and she remembered the sun and the way the sun was and the sky was when she was four in Ohio. And they, they had been on Venus all of their lives, and they had been only two years old when last the sun came out and had long since forgotten the color and heat of it and the way it really was. But Margot remembered” (Bradbury 27). This shows why the other kids in Margot’s class dislike her. This ends up leading to the other kids locking her in the closet when the sun comes. Margot wanted to see the sun because it only comes out once every seven years and when it does come out it only stays for one hour. The classmates’ jealousy results in Margot’s exclusion from what she enjoyed most while on Earth and Venus. Another example of jealousy is in this quote from paragraph 60 “The children lay out, laughing on the jungle mattress and heard it sigh and squeak under them, resilient and alive. They ran among the trees, they slipped and fell, they pushed each other, they played hide-and-seek and tag, but most of all they squinted at the sun until the tears ran down there faces, they put there hands up ti that yellowness and that amazing blueness and they breathed of the fresh, fresh air and listened and listened to the silence which suspended them n a blessed sea of no sound and no motion. They looked at everything and savored everything. Then wildly, like animals escaping from their caves, they ran and ran in shouting circles”(60). This quote from paragraph 60 shows the importance of the sun in this story. It shows in detail why the sun is so important to the kids. After this happened in the story the sun went away for another seven years. They end up realizing that they left Morgott in the closet the whole time and all the kids feel remorseful about their
