In the passage of Mark 1, it is the good news / gospel of Jesus Christ, Son of God. This good news needed to be preached to the people in Judea and Jerusalem. They needed to respond to this good news by coming to the wilderness and accepting the baptism of repentance for forgiveness of sins.
The audience lived in the usually life without knowing the Messiah was coming.
They had to go to the new state of going to see John in the wilderness and accepting the baptism of repentance for forgiveness of sin.

The intended audience is for new believers. The purpose is to reveal to the newly converted believers what was foretold in the Old Testament message in the Bible happened in New Testament times and letting them trust in God that everything is under His control. They have to come out from their old understandings and their comfort zones to meet the Lord.
The message was for those who were in captive. They would have the hope. The people of God needed to be prepared, by repentance and faith, for the Messiah planned for them. There was the voice of one crying in the wilderness, which may be applied to those prophets who were with the captives and who, when they saw the day of their deliverance coming. The call urged them to prepare for it, and assured them that all the difficulties which stood in the way of their deliverance should be ended soon.
