Mark TwainSamuel L. Clemens was born on November 30, 1835 and was an author who wrote under the pen name of Mark Twain. He wrote several novels and was also a journalist and an inventor. “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” and “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” are classics in American Literature written by Mark Twain (History.com). Mark Twain’s stories are mostly famous for their humor, their vivid details, and memorable characters. Mark Twain grown up in Hannibal, Missouri and began to work early at the age of twelve after his dad died. He took odd jobs to help out his family and continued schooling (Shsmo.org). Mark Twain started to work with his brother when they first arrived but later thought he could make money mining for gold and silver. Mark Twain failed making money has a miner and returned to journalism and became a reporter. Mark Twain got his pen name in 1863 while he was working as a reporter. His name is steamboat slang for twelve feet of water (Biography.com). In the west Mark Twain became one of the best known storytellers. By 1864 Mark Twain had moved to San Francisco and worked for different newspapers. One of his stories in 1865 “Jim Smiley and His Jumping Frog” was printed in the newspaper (Shsmo.org). Mark Twain had gave his first lecture in the 1866 and to make money he began a lecture tour in the western states. Then in 1867 while he was on a mediterranean sea cruise he wrote about the sights for American newspapers. In 1869 the best seller “The Innocents Abroad” was published(History.com). Mark Twain then settled with his wife in Connecticut where he would focus on writing the books and novels that has made him famous. Some of his novels focused on his childhood in Missouri. Other novels he wrote included issues such as slavery, poverty, and class differences. In 1902 Mark Twain accepted an honorary degree from the University of Missouri(Shsmo.org).
