I remember back when bicycles first started coming with a detachable water bottle and holder. It was all the rage! My kids, as well as everyone else's, simply had to have a bike with the water carriers. You remember what they looked like, don't you? They were long and large with a screw-on lid. The lid had a hole in it with the straw already built in. The bottles could easily snap in and out of the holder which was mounted to the bike. Those old water bottles, if you still have one, are perfect for creating a bicycle survival kit that will offer you anything and everything you might need in case of an emergency or unexpected occurrence. For those of you who do not understand my business do not feel bad very few people understand the complexities of this ever changing and frustrating business. When the economy takes a dive we are the first to suffer the consequences. So after all these years of dodging economic bullets I have developed a series of guide lines. Some of them I will share today. These tips can be used in any business. Your business is shrinking and you need to get the phone ringing. The short term answer is advertising. Actually it is the long term answer as well. In all the areas that I have lived Northern California, Las Vegas Nevada, Dallas and Austin Texas, St Louis Mo. and Omaha Nebraska I have found one common theam the local paper gets terrible results for most business in their line ads. Those are the ads that are in the classified section. The small regional papers usually will make the phone ring even with a moderately sized line ad. The number one rule with all print advertising is the largest ad wins. That could be why the local paper is so bad for classified listings. Papers routinely have large full page ads and anything else looks sad in comparison. In the smaller papers you do not have that competition.
