A little over two years ago, I started working as a Community Support Individual for Pathways Transition Programs LLC. My primary responsibility is to teach children various coping skills to manage their behavior, I have determined that I want to be able to address the emotions behind the behaviors. My desire is to be able to help the children I work with come to terms with their past histories so they can move on in their lives towards adoption and other positive outcomes. Sometimes, the children are still going through issues such as, on-going traumas, the lost of a parent due to death or incarceration, etc and I would like to develop the skill set to be able to address these issues. I see pursuing my degree through Argosy University as being the next step to take in order to develop a competency in counseling.

Mental Health counselor is the best career for me because it will bring me personal satisfaction, financial stability, and abilities to help others. First, a career as a mental health counselor would bring me personal satisfaction. In 7th grade, I started noticing deep cuts on the arms and legs of my fellow students, and dealt with those who felt like there is no hope for them. I’ve had to sit there and watch as those I care about fall to depression and beg to die, knowing there is very little I can do to help them.

I chose mental health counseling as a profession due to personal experiences in my life. Choosing to become a professional counselor is not only a personal commitment to me, but to others, and to society as a whole. As a survivor of domestic violence, I felt a strong desire and need to make a difference in lives of many suffering from: personal issues like anger management, depression, suicidal thoughts, aging, parenting, self-image, relational problems, stress, addiction, and women involved with domestic violence. My goal would be to provide the proper assessment and diagnosis to provide necessary treatment such as: psychotherapy, substance abuse treatment, and crisis management.
Mental health in social work is important to me because it is something I can closely relate to, although I did not always see it that way. Finishing high school and going into college I had no idea what I wanted to major in or what career I wanted to pursue. Unfortunately, my mom passed away before I graduated high school so I started college in a fog of grief and depression and I felt even more clueless than I was to begin with. My mother had bipolar disorder and I have several other family members who suffer from mental illness, so mental health
Mental Health Therapy is an ideal career for those who can easily relate to people and understand what they go through. A mental health therapist usually talks to and helps everyday people with mental issues and regular issues that affect their everyday lives. Therapists also help and solve marriage and family problems. Mental health therapy is a good job for those who enjoy helping other people when they are struggling with their issues. Although this may be a stressful job, a mental health therapist can set their own hours and meet with patients in a comfortable and safe environment.
I’ve always wondered what I was going to be when I grew up, but I just could never find the right job. I would always run into the problem of either finding a career that I wouldn’t like or one that I wouldn’t understand. However, according to the Holland Code I am investigative, social, and artistic. This has shown to open a lot of career ideas for me; especially ones that include interacting and helping with others. Looking through all of them, there were a few that I definitely have thought of.
