Martin Luther King Jr One interesting fact that I did not know about Martin Luther King Jr was that he was born on January 15, 1929 as Michael King Jr. to Michael King Sr and Alberta Williams King. He was very intelligent in school and was a Baptist minister when he was older. King was also known for his nonviolence protests and his infamous speeches, that we still learn about today. Furthermore, he was a social activist who led the Civil rights Movement in the United States from the mid-1950s until his assassination in 1968.

Later, King Jr also adopted the name and became Martin Luther King Jr. In school Martin was a very bright student. He skipped both the ninth and eleventh grade and entered Morehouse College in Atlanta at the age of 15, where he earned a degree in Sociology. He was also valedictorian in 1951. The president of Morehouse College, Benjamin E. Mays influenced Martin’s spiritual development and encouraged King to view Christianity as a potential force for social change. King enrolled at Boston University where he completed his Ph.D. and earned his degree in 1955. He was only 25 years old.
Dr. King was a big believer of the philosophy on nonviolent resistance during the Civil Rights Movement. Frustrated by the city’s neglect and abuse of its black employees, 1300 black men went on strike. On March 28, the attempted to begin the March in Memphis, there was an estimate of 22,000 students that didn’t go to school to participate in the demonstration. Dr. King arrived late and noticed that the crowd was on the edge of chaos. They began the march and soon after violence began. King was swept away to his hotel and the others were ordered to return to the church. During this chaos a 16-year-old was shot and killed by a police officer, they followed the protestors back to the church and entered, which in that time they through tear gas inside the sanctuary and clubbed people that laid on the floor to get fresh air. What King didn’t know was that there were protestors there that were frim a group called the Black Power that started the violence, so he was reluctant to go back to Memphis. In the end he did end up going back on April 3rd. He delivered a speech, I’ve been to the Mountaintop, where he talked about reaching the promise land but that he might not be there to experience it. I think that he felt that his time was near and wanted to voice that the people can continue to his work to fight for the promise land.
