Her comments appear to be in good nature by saying that the minister is angry about the violence that was committed, but by tacking on the fact that he disagrees with the lifestyle, she devalues the life of Matthew Shepard. The dragon is meant to symbolize each of the characters I chose in Laramie. They are all two faced. They say one thing, but they really saying another thing. This is why one of the faces is surrounded by white and the other surrounded by black. The black and white represent two different things. The white represents what they appear to be saying, which is good, but the black represents the subtext, or what they are really saying, which is bad. The black and white also represent the fact that to the average Laramie citizens, things are viewed as black and white. If you’re gay, you automatically fit into a single category and if you’re not, then you don’t. Also, while designing the essay, I made sure to put the “nice” part of the quote on the white side and the subtext part on the black side. I also made a bright red line down the center of the visual to represent that their is a fine line between being tolerant and being intolerant. For the symbols, I purposely put a bible at the center of the picture in between the the two dragons because on one hand the bible promotes love and acceptance, but on the other hand, it promoted inequality and prejudice. As for the cocoon, I purposely placed it on the white side because it is very similar to the remarks of the townspeople. It represents being shielded and having your appearance be different then your reality. The cocoon looks beautiful, but on the inside it is not. This connects to my next symbol, which is the moth. While we usually associate butterflies coming out of cocoons, moths also come out of cocoons. Moths eat fabric and cloth and are considered to be disgusting creatures. Like the citizens of Laramie, they cause harm to people around them.
