Before 10th grade, I had an insufficiently rigorous course load to yield a competitive GPA. After taking the most rigorous classes for a year and boosting my GPA, I have decided to help my classmates tackle the competition at my school by helping them organize their schedules and classes for future academic years. I have reached out to these classmates through class projects and tutoring sessions. So far, I have helped about five teenagers become competitive. I have also frequently volunteered at a local food pantry.
I thought Meals on Wheels of America was just a simple organization covering the surrounding counties that provided a meal a day to senior citizens who had trouble providing a meal for themselves. However, I have learned that Meals on Wheels of America was established in 1954 and is the oldest and largest national organization representing community based senior nutrition programs and that it has 5,000 member programs, in which they provide over 1 million meals to seniors every day, which are served at senior centers as well as delivering meals directly to the homes of seniors whose mobility is limited. After reading chapter 6 and learning about outpatient and inpatient services, I have realized in my experience as a volunteer at a local
The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) has defined six key values for social work practice: service, social justice, the importance of human relationships, dignity and worth of the person, and competence. Social justice is an essential core value within Mission Australia in guiding its programs and campaigns. This is exemplified by Mission Australia addressing and educating the community on social injustice and disadvantage, pushing for systemic change to enhance the lives of marginalised and at-risk individuals. By offering services and programmes that aim to address the underlying causes of social problems, like education on homelessness, Mission Australia exemplifies the fundamental concept of social justice and why it should be addressed not only by charity organisations but the general public. For instance, their housing and homelessness programmes work to give those who are homeless or at risk of becoming so safe and affordable accommodation in which donations of the community are accepted.
In 2008 Meals on Wheels found that nearly 6 million seniors faced the in 2007. Nearly half of these seniors had incomes that were below the Federal poverty line. When seniors lack the resources to get safe and nutritious foods they experience negative nutrition and health consequences. The consequences seniors face are that they have lower nutrient intakes which causes them to have vitamins and minerals deficiencies. These deficiencies causes them to have worst health problems.
As a leader within an organisation it is crucial that you understand how to communicate your organisation’s mission and goals to those around you. It’s about providing wellness, nourishment and strength. That’s why it’s our mission to provide the most nutritious food possible to improve people’s health and well-being. We know that for populations like children and seniors, a balanced diet can be particularly essential to succeeding in school, complementing medication and battling disease. Unfortunately, nutrition-related illnesses disproportionately affect food-insecure people. When you join the Feeding America Hunger Council as a monthly donor, you become someone we can count on to help families facing hunger.
For this service-learning project, I decided to volunteer at Meals on Wheels in Rocky Mount. Meals on Wheels is a nonprofit organization that deliver meals to individuals at home that are unable to purchase or prepare their own meals. My grandmother who volunteers with them every Tuesday first introduced me to the program 10 years ago. Kara is a family friend who is the Director of Development for Meals on Wheels. She helped me get the volunteering opportunity.
Also the websites states the need for plenty of healthy food choices for children instead of cheaper, more calorie-packed alternatives (“Looking for Info?”). This is where federal food programs come into play and can make a difference in children’s lives. Children are dying day after day due to hunger and these food programs can stop that. These federal food programs can keep kids healthy and can make a difference in the future and life they will continue to
I’ve been asked many times; “Why do you want to be a social worker?” The answer to that is quite simple. I want to be a social worker because of the happiness helping others brings me. I thought I could change the world by influencing future generations through

In addition to working with children and geriatrics I have also worked with people who were diagnosed with Post traumatic stress disorder, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, traumatic brain injury and Alzheimer 's disease to name a few. These experiences have allowed me to understand the role of a social worker, as I have opportunity to be exposed to multi-disciplinary treatment teams.
The whole system focus of social work is universal, but the priorities of social work practice will differ from one country to the next, and from time to time depending on historical, cultural, political and socio-economic conditions.
