In 2008 Meals on Wheels found that nearly 6 million seniors faced the in 2007. Nearly half of these seniors had incomes that were below the Federal poverty line. When seniors lack the resources to get safe and nutritious foods they experience negative nutrition and health consequences. The consequences seniors face are that they have lower nutrient intakes which causes them to have vitamins and minerals deficiencies. These deficiencies causes them to have worst health problems. Which in turn cause them to lose their independents to live active lives, unable to do basic everyday things such as bathe, cook and feed theirselves, end up having to move out of their homes into a senior living facility or long term care, and face getting chronic illnesses. During the Great Recession seniors faced many losses such as loss of job, health benefits, stocks and bonds but the most important loss they loss was access to enough food. The demographic characteristics of the seniors most affected by food insecurity are blacks the retired and the disabled, women, welfare recipients, the less educated, people that live in rural areas, states were unemployment levels are high and government benefits are low. I think that government and public programs need to work on finding ways to have more companies donate food instead of throwing it out. Another thing they need to work on is having more community gardens where people can volunteer their time to help seniors grow produce, allow seniors to grow their own produce and allow them to sell their produce to make some extra money. In conclusion seniors face many negative nutrition and health consequences dealing with food insecurity but we can reduce these problems by having more companies donate food that will be tossed and having more community gardens for seniors to
