Media and it’s Impact on Young Girls and Their Perspectives of Themselves The media is an infinite source of information, from the newest fashion trends to the daily lives of celebrities, the media impacts us all in some way. In today’s society many girls feel inadequate and uncomfortable in their own bodies because of society's definition of beauty and perfection. According to the National Institute on Media and the Family there was a study that found that by age thirteen 53 percent of American girls are unhappy with their bodies and that by the time they turned seventeen the percent of girls unhappy with how their bodies look or how they are proportioned raised to 78 percent.(Media's effect on body image., n.d.) Magazines aimed at young girls have articles telling them the top diet tips from celebrities, advertisements aimed to sell girls things to change how they look, how to lose weight fast, and celebrities tips to losing weight. Teen People Magazine did a recent survey of the teenage girls who bought their magazine and at least 27% or readers felt pressured by the media to have the ‘perfect body.’(Media's effect on body image., n.d.) In another survey 69 percent of girls said that the models in the magazine are influencing their idea of the perfect body shape.(Media's effect on body image., n.d.) At Stanford University in 1992 a study of female students 70 percent of the candidates felt worse about their body after looking at magazines.(Media's effect on body image., n.d.)
