Mental Health Personal Statement

Living with any form of mental illness is never an easy task for one person to deal with alone. My main reason for applying to this course is to attain the knowledge, skill set, and credentials to be able to start and maintain a fulfilling career as mental health professional, specifically a school counselor. My primary interest in counseling started with my own journey as a teenager with depression and finding out that many of my friends at the time were also suffering from stress and overwhelming mental health conditions that we did not fully understand at the time. Having previously studied a variety of concepts in both the philosophical and social sciences I have attained a much better understanding of differences in equality as well as the power of privilege and oppression and how these factors can immensely impact therapeutic interventions. My academic studies have also taught me far more about myself and my capabilities than I would have expected to gain in the last few years. With the world being uprooted by the pandemic, studying at the associate and undergraduate levels became a different beast altogether, however, adapting to these intense changes allowed me to re-examine myself along with the way that I work and learn how to cope with the demands presented with these new changes. This included learning to form meaningful relationships with people over long distances and using introspection to learn what I could improve when my mentors and supervisors were out of reach. My current studies in the field of psychology relate directly to this course because it has given me the foundational framework and elements needed to be successful in the counseling and psychotherapy field. For example, using the various theoretical approaches in psychology such as solution- focused therapy or cognitive behavior therapy for treating and engaging future clients and their support
