In chapter two of our text book, mental illness was discussed. The book states that “mentally ill individuals experience abnormal feelings, thoughts, and behaviors that persist, interfere with daily life, and hinder psychological adjustment and growth” (Alters & Schiff, 2013, p. 53). There are many different types of mental illnesses. Each mental illness can range from a mild to a severe effect on the individual. One psychological illness the book focused on was obsessive compulsive disorder. Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) is an anxiety disorder in which people have unwanted and repeated thoughts, feelings, ideas and sensations, which makes them feel compelled to perform certain actions. It is believed to have biological and environmental factors that are involved with OCD. Scientists think that it may be caused by some complications in the pathways of the brain. OCD is genetic, but a specific gene has not been found. Having parents or other family members with this disorder can make your risk of developing OCD extremely high. Some environmental factors, such as, infections that are left untreated might trigger OCD like streptococcus. Abuse, stress, problems with work or school, and relationship problems can trigger OCD. Symptoms of OCD can come and go or get better or worse at different times depending on the individual’s stress level. Obsessive compulsive disorder treatment may not cure the person, but it can help control the symptoms so they don't rule the individual’s daily life. Some people will need treatment for the rest of their lives. The most common treatment options for OCD is psychotherapy and medication. Usually treatment is most effective with a combination of both. Therapy may involve gradually exposing affected individuals to a feared object or obsession, such as, dirt. Physicians may prescribe medication to help lower the anxiety associated with this
