Mercutio is a unique character that develops and creates a silly and serious tone in the play The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, by William Shakespeare. Mercutio’s energetic personality develops and/or influences the feud, the audience, and key characters like Romeo, which leads to crucial progressions in the play. Shakespeare blends comedy and tragedy by using distinctive techniques to influence the audience and readers to their emotions. In the play The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, William Shakespeare creates many characters with unique abilities and purposes. Mercutio was made to strategically feed the audience's comedic needs. Death finally crept into him as he lay motionless on the ground and at that moment the cheerful and comedic mood that Mercutio created disappeared into thin air. Although Mercutio was used to create a comedic mood, he also indirectly impacted both Romeo and the feud itself. Mercutio’s loyalty towards his friends plays an especially crucial role in revealing new sides of Romeo and impacting the feud. As demonstrated in act 3, scene 1, where Mercutio got agitated by Romeo’s lack of response to Tybalt insulting him. Which resulted in Mercutio and Tybalt to fight, eventually leading to his death. His death both indirectly affected the feud and revealed new sides to Romeo’s character. The death of Mercutio eventually leads Romeo, who was guided by rage, to lash out towards Tybalt seeking revenge and killing him. As a result of this, Romeo is banished from Verona, causing more chaos as well as distress to the feud as the Montagues are grieving Romeo’s banishment and the Capulets wept for Tybalt’s death.
