The Tale of Star Crossed Lovers

In William Shakespeare’s The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet and in the movie Romeo + Juliet we are shown multiple differences that both overall share the same ideas. In both examples of the play we are portrayed a story of star crossed lovers who in time take their own lives. Not only do both the original Shakespeare novel and the movie remake follow a story of great impulse and not the most clear decision making. We are constantly shown examples of impulsiveness not only from children but adults as well.

In the movie Romeo watches his best friend, Mercutio, die right in front of him to Tybalt's hand. Seeing his best friend die in front of him adds to the despair and anger along with a new theme of revenge. This theme gets displayed in the movie because Romeo sought out Tybalt to kill him. Romeo could not let that happen to Mercutio without having some repercussions. Her mom lets her know the news that she will be married to Paris on Thursday and the family gets into a huge fight. We learn that Juliet's father is verbally, and in the movie, physically abusive. After this big fight Juliet goes to the Frair for confession, but really she asked Frair what to do about the marriage and she told the Frair she was going to kill herself. In the movie we also see Juliet threaten to kill the Frair as well if she was going to have to marry someone else. The Frair gave Juliet a poison that wouldn’t kill her just simply make her look dead. There plan was to let Romeo know that she wasn’t really dead before news broke to him. Sadly Romeo’s impulsive behavior was showed once again as once his cousin Benvollio told him Juliet was dead and they hopped in Romeo’s car and drove to Verona were he was exiled, as they were driving off we see the mailman who was dropping the letter off to let Romeo know the real plan. We keep getting examples of Romeo's impulsive behavior when he stops at some sketchy pharmacy to buy a poison to take his own life. After Romeo makes his way to the church Juliet laid asleep in we are shown another difference.
