In the play Romeo and Juliet. This literature technique, foil is used between the characters Romeo and Mercutio. They talk to each other but are nothing alike. Romeo is more impulsive with his decision making. And never really thinks before he does.
In Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare use many foils to give contrast throughout the play. A foil is a comparation between two unlike characters in a play. The characters that caught my attention the most was the foil of Benvolio and Tybalt. They reveal their contrast between their emotions, roles in the play, and as protagonists and antagonists in the story. Therefore, Tybalt and Benvolio represent a classic example of foils in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet.
There were many violent ends within the play that all began with Romeo and Juliet’s forbidden love, and one was the passing of five characters. Mercutio was a relative to the prince and as such he was untouchable. On the other hand he also subtly chose sides. Being friends with the Montagues was the beginning of the road to his death. He was an extremely witty person within the play constantly making jokes, but he also had a vivid imagination coming up with eloquent stories for the trio to hear.
This comes together because Shakespeare is showing that Mercutio is a happy, joker, and Romeo is like a sad panda of some
William Shakespeare’s, Romeo and Juliet, provides great foils for the main character, Romeo. Shakespeare includes many foils throughout his stories to make his character’s emotions, attitude, and characteristics more apparent. Romeo’s character traits, lovestruck, cowardness, and emotional are highlighted through his foils, best friend Mercutio, and enemy, Tybalt. Romeo’s foils help to make his character’s personality stronger and clear. One character trait that’s highlighted through Tybalt is Romeo’s complete awe and love for Juliet.
Mercutio is different from Romeo because he does not believe in love and makes fun of Romeo and falling in love so heavily all the time. When Romeo describes his love for Rosaline using a rose with thorns as a metaphor. Mercutio laughs and says ”If love be rough with you, be rough with love; Prick love for pricking and you beat love down”(I.4.27-28). In another scenario of Romeo and Mercutio’s foils is when Romeo tells his friends about a dream he had about the party and is expecting a disastrous outcome of the party. Mercutio makes fun of Romeo because he does not believe that dreams can become visions of impending danger.
Throughout history, it seems that many great stories include an outrageous character that completely grasps the audiences attention. In The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, Mercutio is considered to be one of Shakespeare's most memorable creations because of his unique personality with the use of his wittiness, him being a foil to Romeo, and his ruining of romantic sentiments. Mercutio's wittiness makes him a memorable character because his silliness conveys the misery starting to screen so the general audience is able to a more prominent attitude. Mercutio begins a fight with Tybalt, but get injured when Tybalt accidents stabs him.
These character have the same foil because the act the same and do the same hobbies. Romeo is very nice but in the story he ends up killing Tybalt calling him a fortunes fool (Shakespeare 429). Rome thinks he is a good lover when him and Juliet kiss and kills him self for Juliet (Shakespeare 394). When Romeo kills tybalt he is brave (Shakespeare 429). Helping him was is attitude when he ran away after killing tybalt.
In the play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, Mercutio, a friend of Romeo plays deep role within the play. In the play many characters represent the masculine and feminine space. Mercutio’s represents the masculine space of love and it affects Romeo in the long run. Because of Mercutio’s huge expression and dominance of the masculine space, his mockery towards the feminine space of love and fooling around with women, pushes Romeo towards tragedy.
Romeo fought Tybalt till he died. Mercutio shows that he will go through any circumstances to make his friends and family happy.
All stories, plays, and literary arts, have characters that propel the plot forward with their actions and decisions, and in William Shakespeare's play, “Romeo and Juliet”, Mercutio is that character. He plays an extremely important and essential role in the play. Without him, Romeo wouldn't have met his love, and also enemy, Juliet Capulet. Mercutio was also the one that provoked a fight with Tybalt, Juliet's cousin, and as a result, Tybalt killed Mercuito and this is where and when Romeo and Juliet’s love story starts to collapse. Mercutio is an optimistic, loyal, and comedic character, also the kinsman of Prince Escalus.
Shakespeare has formulated several memorable characters throughout his writings, such as Nurse from The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, Lady Macbeth from Macbeth, and Mercutio from Romeo and Juliet. Mercutio is such a memorable character due to his characteristics of being sarcastic and cynical, as well as his major impact on plot development. Mercutio isn’t completely serious though, as he was cracking jokes on his deathbed. Although Mercutio isn’t a Montague, he is good friends with Romeo and takes the side of the Montagues in the war of the opposing families.
My character analysis is on Mercutio, a kinsmen of the prince and a best friend to Romeo, in William Shakespeare’s play, Romeo and Juliet. In the play, Mercutio comes off as being the sarcastic, bipolar, and immature. First, Mercutio first comes off as being sarcastic, because he makes fun of Romeo’s dream about him dying. On the way to the Capulet party that Benvolio invites Romeo to, Romeo talks of a dream that foreshadows his death.
Mercutio is very loyal to Romeo and the entire Montague family as well as Benvolio. Mercutio risked his life to keep Romeo safe everyday and unfortunately lost his life doing his “job”. Mercutio didn't see his duty to be with or around and protecting Romeo as a job, just his everyday lifestyle being around his friends and enjoying himself. For example, “Mercutio angrily draws his sword and declares
In the book Romeo and Juliet, William Shakespeare shows that Mercutio is a versatile character in showing both loyalty, humour, friendship, and most importantly became one of the starting points of tragedy. Mercutio may be confused as just a regular comic relief character, who is just
