Metaphors In Illenium's Song, Beautiful Creatures

The song, Beautiful Creatures by Illenium, was written to let the listeners to go beyond their beliefs and that we are all just people looking for the things in life. The song uses metaphors, similes, and plenty of imagery to help understand why the song was written and its purpose. They added specific detail to the lyrics to connect with the listeners and to imagine what life is really about. Beautiful creatures has multiple metaphors in their lyrics. One of the most used is “we got monsters in our closets had a reason but we lost it” (Illenium lines 5-6, 21-22). This brings the monsters that we all thought we had in our closets when we were little, but overtime lost it as we discovered it was all in our heads. “We swear we're alive, but we're falling to pieces” (Illenium lines 10, 26) is explaining that we can’t always be the brightest people on the earth, but our life experiences can bring us down at times. Similes used in the lyrics connect the listeners to what is being sung. Since Illenium wrote the song to put our background behind us they added phrases to add explain what that might feel like in that process. Some examples are “we howl at the moon”(Illenium lines 12,27) and “we should be flying” (Illenium lines 13, 28) create an image that once you learn how to let go from the past and judgement that you will be free to howl at the moon and to fly. Another explanation of imagery is “Standing tall, shaking off the dust now we know, now we know what we're made of” (Illenium line 19). This line can be seen as shaking off the dust that we or those around us has put on ourselves. It states that we are all from the most basic level and were created equal as you shake off that layer covering it
