The aim of the methodological critique is to assess and evaluate the research methods used in the study on ‘Visible tattoos in the service sector […]’ by Timming (2015). Also, this methodological critique will provide few recommendations for amendments in regards to the best practise and theory. The qualitative study focused on the impact of visible tattoos on employment chances, the influences of management and consumers expectations. Timming’s (2015) method drew upon 25 in-depth semi-structured interviews to raise awareness and provide relative detail of the influences of a perception, culture and experience, surrounding exposed tattoos (Saunders et al, 2012, pp318-320; Collis and Hussey, 2013, pp 3). Saunders et al (2012), Bell and Waters (2014) agree that an introduction should state the issues or cause, the background and the aim of the research. Timming (2015) seems to have met the criteria with a coherent format explaining the study topic and there’s a need to raise awareness of its effects on recruitment processes. Also, Timming defines ‘Visible tattoos’ and explains the specific ‘body art[s] that cannot be readily concealed’ as the main type of tattoos, likely to alter chances of employment. Timming (2015) face- to-face interviews and questions used, took on an interpretivist approach as the data was qualitative, logical and visual in the way it was reported back to the reader. Which made it easier for the reader to follow the type of qualitative research taken. These questions consisted of open and closed questions for both the hire managers and the tattooed respondents (Saunders et al. 2012, pp).
