Harry Gerard Bissinger wrote a non-fictional book entitled Friday Night Lights. Britain had been less dreadfully affected by the Great Depression but Britain 's industrial and export sectors continued to be seriously depressed until World War II. By 1931 many other countries had already been affected by the Depression. Almost all of the nation 's looked to protect their domestic production by imposing tariffs, increasing current tariffs, and placing quotas on foreign imports. The outcome of the restrictive measures put into place were to tremendously decrease the volume of international trade. The nation 's economic health slowly worsened as the president and business leaders attempted to convince the citizenry that rehabilitation from the Great Depression was imminent.
Most people might say that President Bush and President Reagan are like comparing vinegar and water they are complete opposite good leaders but yet they were not historical figures. Bush said I’ve abandoned free-market principles to save free market system. Those words would never have been said by Regan, as Bush did a massive spending spree in his last weeks of presidency. Bush claims to be the conservative that Reagan was, early on in his career he challenged the GOP, which Regan won in 1980, Bush and other republican challengers thought his conservatism would be rejected by the voters. It is known that Regan’s record in all aspects is inferior to Bush by advancing conservative principles.
The United States economy was in disarray, suffering after the 1979 energy crisis. Due to high unemployment and inflation, many Americans had lost faith in the government and the nation as a whole. When Reagan took office in 1981, the recession and this “national malaise” were already about a year old. However, many people faulted him for America’s poor condition. Immediately, he addressed the declining economy, introducing many new policies that came to be known as “Reaganomics.”
In the article “How I Discovered the Truth about Poverty” Barbara Ehrenreich gives her view in poverty and explains why she think Michael Harington’s book “The Other American” gives a wrong view on poverty. She explained that Harrington believes that the poor thought and felt differently and what divides the poor was their different “culture of poverty.” Ehrenreich goes on to explain on how the book that became a best seller caused so many bad stereotypes on the poor that by the Reagan era poverty was seen as “bad attitudes” and “faulty lifestyles” and not by the lack of jobs or low paying jobs. And they also viewed the poor as “Dissolute, promiscuous, prone to addiction and crime, unable to “defer gratification,” or possibly even set an alarm clock.”
The nation seemed to be troubled by its loss of power and fall from grace on the world stage.
