Michelangelo was one of the most famous artist from the Renaissance period. He was born on March 6, 1475 and died on February 18, 1564. He was born in Caprese, Italy and he died in Macel de'Corvi, Rome. Michelangelo was first became a painter. Michelangelo was many things. He was a painter, poet, an architect, and a sculptor. He helped shape the Renaissance period.
When Michelangelo was in school, one of his friends named Francesco Ghirlandaio, introduced Michelangelo to Domenico Ghirlandaio. Michelangelo was interested in art. His dad soon realized that he was not going to keep the family banking business. His father put him into a Florentine painter's workshop. After some time in Bologna, he ended up back in Florence in 1495 where he worked as a sculptor. There are stories of how Michelangelo sculpted this scuplture called "Cupid" and he tried to sell it off as an antique. He sculpted it very similar and aged it to make the sculpture look like the antique. Raffaele Riario bought this sculpture thinking it was the original, but then figured out it wasn’t and was outraged. Because he had even managed to fool him, Raffaele Riario invited Michelangelo to stay in Rome. One of his most famous pieces is the Pieta. He created this sculpture when he was twenty five years old. This sculpture is Mary who is holding Jesus who is dead. He is laying across her lap. Michelangelo angled Jesus this way to show that Mary was holding Jesus up and to show that he was dead. Michelangelo carved his name across Mary's chest just to claim that he was the one who created this sculpture. Michelangelo finished this sculpture in less than a year. The statue is six feet tall and now can be found in St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City.
Michelangelo became a success. Many people were figuring out about him and this made him very popular. Before Michelangelo went to create the sculpture "David", he found out that he was not the only one who had tried to create this. Two other sculptors had tried to sculpt this. Michelangelo was the one who was able to complete it. David is made entirely of marble. David is completely nude in this sculpture.
