(March 6th 1475 - February 18th 1564) born in Caprese, Italy Michelangelo was an Italian painter, architect, poet and sculptor. Before his name was known he was just an apprentice to a painter and eventually began studying in sculpture, in the gardens of a wealthy and famous family known as the Medici. He has been remembered as the most famous artist in the time of the Renaissance. Some of his famous works include The Last Judgement (1535-1541), David (1501-1504), and the Pieta (1498-1499). Perhaps the most recognized work of his, is located on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, which took about 4 years to paint.
Located inside this palace is the beautiful and world famous Sistine Chapel, known for its amazing artwork through the chapel itself and on the ceilings. In 1505, Pope Julius II brought Michelangelo to Rome to work on a tomb for Julius that he had planned, however two years later the Pope demanded that Michelangelo began painting the ceilings of the Sistine Chapel. Michelangelo, would enjoyed sculpting, did not want to paint the ceiling and complained the entire time. But nevertheless he began his work, laid on a scaffold, and painted the ceiling of the Chapel, not knowing at the time that the ceiling for the Sistine Chapel would be one of his most talked about achievements. Pope Julius II had plans for a clean and straightforward ceiling, but told Michelangelo to paint freely and whatever he would like.

Born during the Renaissance era or “Rebirth” as some may call it, Michelangelo usedthis critical change in time to his advantage. Michelangelo used his day to day life challengesand struggles to exemplify his masterpieces in sculpture and art. With his mother passing at ayoung age, his father working hard to provide for Michelangelo and his siblings, and theconstant relocation his family did, Michelangelo was had some obstacles to overcome at such ayoung age. I feel these and many other challenges he faced molded him into the artistic legendhe is to this present day. The man was so great he was also referred to as “The Divine One”.

Famous for the nudity of his sculptors and paintings, he believed that making his art in the image of how God sees human kind was the best way to show how God loves us. Some of his most famous pieces are the Sistine Chapel, which was his largest and most important work of his life . A generation later he painted the Last Judgment, and he also sculpted the Statue of David. Michelangelo had another side of him that a lot of people don’t think about when his name comes up, he was also a writer. He wrote hundreds of poems that had a lot of sentimental value and were very deep.
Leonardo da Vinci was a man who “could not separate science from art… He did not distinguish between them; they were present simultaneously” (PUCEKOVIĆ 34). Before painting, he would make numerous sketches of perspective and observations in his notebook. He was a polymath who constantly sought to further his knowledge and understanding of the world around him.. ”The scientific achievements of Leonardo da Vinci… were virtually unknown during his lifetime and remained unknown for more than 2 centuries after his death” (Perloff).
Throughout reading chapter 7, I found the story of Michelangelo most interesting. Looking at the picture I found it interesting how their body language told a story. In the paining God is on the right surrounded by many figures with his arm stretched towards Adam’s. Adam is laid back on a rock with his right arm resting on the rock with his left arm almost touching God’s.
Michelangelo known mostly for his paintings in the Sistine Chapel, but he also had other work. It is thought that he was a really famous painter, but honestly Michelangelo was not a painter. Michelangelo was actually a famous sculpture, but Pope Julius II believed that he could do it so Michelangelo had to come up with a plan so he didn’t humiliate himself. Michelangelo didn’t know anything about painting but he figured learning fresco would help.
The subject that I chose for my paper was “Art: The work of Leonardo da Vinci on perspective, light, shadows, and color in painting” . I chose this specific subject because I used to be an art major that didn’t really care for art I never really paid attention in my humanities courses so I felt that in a way this would redeem me for my lost chance at knowledge. Michelangelo was a brilliant Italian Renaissance artist who famously stated, “The greater danger for most of us lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low, and achieving our mark.” I am in complete agreement with Michelangelo's statement. His quote delivers a very powerful message: one only fails if he or she sets his or her standards too low. Michelangelo’s quote reminds me of a time when I was playing for a volleyball team and set my goals extremely low.
