One of the most well-known and popular artists during the Renaissance was Michelangelo Buonarroti. Some of his most famous pieces are the Sistine Chapel, which was his largest and most important work of his life . A generation later he painted the Last Judgment, and he also sculpted the Statue of David. Michelangelo had another side of him that a lot of people don’t think about when his name comes up, he was also a writer. He wrote hundreds of poems that had a lot of sentimental value and were very deep. He wrote because he loved to and being an artist wasn’t his only passion. Luigi de Riccio and Vasari were two of the main people he addressed his letters to. Luigi had a huge plan of actually getting Michelangelo’s poems published. He took such an interest in them and insisted that they do it. Sadly, the project was abandoned after Luigi passed away, also reducing the amount of Michelangelo’s poetry. Now Vasari, was also someone who completely admired Michelangelo. Vasari describes that Michelangelo didn’t want to just write poetry, he wanted to write something to help other artists, but he feared not being able to express in writing what he wished. Vasari then states, “He was sent into the world by God to help artists learn from his life, his character and his works what a true artist should be. I thank God that I have experienced one of the greatest boons an artist can enjoy, in being born in his time, in having him for a master, and having such friendly relations with him, as is well known and as his letters to me testify”
