A healthy 6-year old is capable of participating in many physical activities and possesses many abilities that allow them to do so. By the age of 6, they weigh around 46 pounds and are at a height of 46 inches on average (Feldman, 2016, LO 3.2). Now that the child is rapidly growing, it is much easier for them to participate and socialize with children in their class at school. Around this age, the distinction between boys and girls begins to become more apparent. The boys will start to become taller and heavier, compared to girls. However, for both genders at the age of 6, their bodies start to appear more slender since legs and arms are beginning to lengthen and body proportions are starting to appear more adult-like (Feldman, 2016, LO 3.2). Since all these physical changes are occurring, a healthy 6-year old will can participate in a variety of active activities. Some of these abilities may include: riding a two-wheel bike, jumping rope, skipping, drawing recognizable pictures or even using more advanced swimming skills such as holding their breath underwater. In chapter one we defined a microsystem as the immediate environment in which one lives their daily lives (Feldman, 2016, LO 1.9). Since this activity is conducted at the child’s after-school facility, it is necessary that the parent gives parental permission to participate in activities that can be dangerous. Additionally, it may be helpful if the child is able to do this activity with a YMCA staff that they are familiar with.
