The characters of the mook and the midriff are used by the media and advertisers to lure young and feeble minded teenagers. The mook is aimed toward teenage boys. A mook has the qualities of being immature and bad-mannered boy whose youth is never ending. The literal definition of a mook is “a stupid or incompetent person.” The literal definition of a mook is similar to the character because both are immature. An example of the media uses mooks to gain the attention of teenage boys and make them buy a product, watch a television show or support a cause. The media and advertisers also portrays a match to the mook which as known as a midriff. The midriff character is aimed toward teenage girls. The characteristics of a midriff characters according to the documentary “The Merchants of Cool” is that they are “highly-sexualized, world-weary sophisticate.” An example of a midriff in today’s advertisements is Victoria’s Secret using skinny and beautiful models. These models are also always surrounded by others, laughing and look like they are having the time of their lives. This attracts the attention of teenage girls because they crave to be skinny, beautiful and popular and feel that if they buy these products and clothes they will be like the models they see on television. I believe this approach is very frequently used today. Mooks and midriffs are marketing techniques used by businesses to make money. Companies and adverstiments as a whole are aimed towards tennagers because they are the ones who have money and they are naive and wide-eyed. Teenagers have their own money and money provided from their parents. Teenagers also are not experienced with money and spend money on things that are not
