The intent of music is to capture emotion and share it with the listener. This ability allows the listener to understand the emotion being expressed by the artist. However, there are some that believe music should be used as white noise in the grocery store or at the gym. Others see music as a waste of time causing people to spend millions on useless soundtracks that you love at the moment and will be tired of in a week. Music has become worthless with these perceptions losing its original intent. The modern genre known as pop has become a dominating genre of music. Though popular, the music released by modern artists has become redundant. Lyrically, modern artists focus on the same topics of drugs, sex, and lustful love. Pop music has hit a point where artists have to combine different genres to create something new. For example, artists such as Pink and Adele began using the style from older songs during the early 2010’s for songs like Just Give Me A Reason or Someone Like You. These songs are beautiful ballads about love implementing an older style effectively portraying a soulful message of lost love. Another example would be songs which incorporate traditional middle eastern style combined with pop such as Selena Gomez’ song Come & Get It. The sexualized nature of music has changed the way music is viewed. Western society is very open about sex, drugs, sexuality, and partying as these topics dominate the music world.
