Module 2: Diagnosis and Characteristics of Students with Disabilities
Disability / Learning Need; Acronyms:
The acronym given for Developmental Delay by the IDEA is “DD”. The IDEA goes onto to identify this disability as a “Child with a disability… aged three through nine.. who is experiencing developmental delays as defined by the State and as measured by appropriate diagnostic instruments and procedures in one or more of the following areas: Physical development, cognitive development, communication development, social or emotional development, or adaptive development; and … thereof, needs special education and related services. [34 CFR §300.8(b)]” (parentcenterhub).
Characteristics:
Because there are so many different characteristics and symptoms of developmental delay in children, I have decided to break it down into several general aspects of development that are affected by this disability.
Physical Delays:
Physical delays can include some, but not all difficulties with gross motor skills, difficulties with fine motor skills, stiff arms or legs, floppy body posture, uses one side of body more than the other, clumsy, poor muscle tone,

It is important to also understand that students who deal with developmental delay, will not function the same and as efficiently as a normal child would.
