At the end of every school year, my piano teacher held an “end of the year recital” where he gave out awards for various character traits and accomplishments. One of his most prestigious awards, “The Most Conscientious Award” was given to the student who was demonstrated the most diligent personality throughout the year and it was the award I sought after the most. Having a strong desire to obtain this award created a lifestyle of conscientiousness and diligence that has never left me. Carrying this mindset through my adolescent years, I chose to apply to one of the most rigorous all-girl schools in Washington D.C., Georgetown Visitation. Knowing that I would be challenged there,I looked past the presumed difficulty, because being challenged throughout middle school was something I valued. Poor grade after grade, I sought my teacher’s assistance every morning before school, but nothing seemed to help to bring me out of my failing slump. I was extremely depressed and discouraged, not because of my grade, but simply because I felt that my teacher viewed me as a complete imbecile. To my surprise, my teacher told me that my positive attitude and drive despite my then seemed misfortune would carry me far.
