Multiculturalism is the co-existence of different cultures. It includes race, religion, gender, and beliefs, which describes the existence, acceptance, or promotion of multiple cultural tradition within a single jurisdiction. This happens when multiple groups of cultures existing within one society due to the influx of immigrants from different parts of the world in a community. Multiculturalism occurs when a society is willing to accept the culture of immigrants and the immigrants are willing to accept to accept the culture of the people to which they have come. There will be unity between people as they interact more, become more aware and better educated about one another. Understanding multiculturalism makes us to live in as peaceful and harmonious world as possible. The possibility of someone living in one culture can tolerate the culture other than he or she will lead to a more peaceful world. This does not mean that he or she just accept all aspects about the other culture but they can take each culture and determine if it can be accepted as a whole. The more we are aware of others cultures, the more we realize and understand why people do things differently from us. Some of these might be bad to us but to them it is their way of life. As long as we can differentiate the good from the bad, it will be easier for us to accept them whoever they are. Growing up in the Philippines and coming to the United States, I have to learn and cope with the cultures of this country. I mean not all of it for I still keep the cultures of my country. This is a good outcome for I have expanded my horizon and learn a great deal of the American way of life. Also with the vast influx of immigrants from different parts of the world, I have learned to adjust myself and learn their cultures.
