The investigation into the murder of Meredith Kercher started on November 2, 2007, when her body was found in the Italian via that she shared with her roommate Amanda Knox and two other girls. Meredith was a British college student studying in Perugia, Italy and had left the night before her murder to go to a dinner party with friends. CCTV footage shows Meredith returning to the cottage around 9:00 PM on 11/01/07. When viewing the initial crime scene, it was clear that her body had been positioned in an unnatural way. Meredith's body was on top of a pillow, a sock and a towel. The pillow, fitted bed sheet and duvet had many blood stains, and the two towels that were found were fully soaked in blood. The crime scene is then closed off and an investigation of evidence begins. In this case, many forensic science techniques were used. These investigations include: witness depositions; phone intercepts; phone log analysis; surveys of the cottage for DNA samples and fingerprints; and reviews of CCTV footage of the parking garage across the street from the cottage. One technique used is autopsy. The coroner investigates the cadaver onsite, realizing two noticeably different sizes of knife wounds in the neck. After performing the autopsy, time of death is estimated around 11:30 PM of 11/01/07, and sex without consent is insinuated from bruising in the genital area. Additionally, analyzing the knife wounds suggested the possibility of multiple knives and a knife with a single cutting edge.
