The most substantial part of my spiritual journey begins while going through a very difficult time in my life. My parents were going through a very destructive divorce, my grandpa -my hero- was diagnosed with a very fast spreading terminal cancer, and several long lasting friendships were coming to an end. This is where I began to ask, “what is the point?” I came to faith in my early twenties and quickly found that I had an insatiable desire to know more about the kingdom of heaven and what it meant when Christ states that it is is at hand. I’ve had roles in education, professional development, intercultural learning, technical support, and teams tasked with innovating. I currently I serve at a private school whose purpose is to provide an education to the indigenous people of Hawai’i while transmuting both Hawaiian and Christian values. As the technology coordinator for Kamehameha Schools Kapālama High School one of my responsibilities includes helping student with the responsible use of technology. Digital citizenship, for us, encompasses the expression of the aforementioned values while empowering our students with the technology that will enhance their education experience. No matter where I’ve served it has been very important to me to be part of a group of people committed to the audacious dream of making learning more accessible and supporting leaners, their teachers, and families. The technological revolution that fostered connectivity between individuals can and should connect learning communities, parents, and students. My degree in theology and a diverse work experience in technology allows me to see the connections, tension and pitfalls that exist between these things. Some of the specific areas I hope to grow in is how technology can be integrated into the learning process to enhance, not confuse, educators and students. How a school with the values we have, chart a curriculum that is culturally relevant to our students. I hope that by furthering my education I can play a larger part in bridging the gap between an ancient culture and modern issues as they relate to the use of technology. I would also like to help in bridging the juxtaposition of culture and technology by helping educators to discover that students can continue to express the values that Christ teaches us to embody in our digital lives while maintaining their distinct Hawaiian values. It’s important that, when we think no one is looking and where we think we can be anonymous, that we are compelled by Christ to go a step further and look for opportunities to bring radical change to the world around us.
