My Experience To Help Dyslexic Students At Shelton School In Dallas

I would like you to know about volunteering this summer to help dyslexic students at Shelton School in Dallas. It was one of the biggest experiences of my life that helped me grow as a person and I realized that I can help people in many different ways.

Growing up for me was one challenge after another in school. I felt like teachers and people at school didn’t really understand that I am capable of doing higher level work, I just learn differently than 80% of the students. When I got to high school, it got especially difficult. I felt that I was just thrown into the deep end of the pool without any guidance. Teachers weren’t as understanding, so it felt like an uphill battle, which was exhausting and defeating. And because of how I felt in “academic classes”, art classes became more important to me because it allowed me to be able to express myself outside of words. Art also helped me realize that I’m not the only one that is going through a learning difference at school, most of my peers in art, and art teachers I have had, are dyslexic too! I helped the teacher help more students so we could give them more individualized attention. I assisted in six classes that had 10 students in each. I worked with 5-8th graders in math and problem solving skills. I helped the students by walking through each skill and I explained it to them in ways that I learned that helped me when I was their age. Also, I helped to reteach what the teacher had explained for those that needed to hear the instructions again. I helped them do worksheets and played educational games with them.
