Trent University, and the surrounding area of Peterborough, Ontario, is home to a very diverse cultural heritage. Located 25 km outside of Peterborough is the Village of Omemee, home to 1100. This is my hometown and homeland. Omemee is settled on a intersection where the Pigeon River meets the Trans-Canada Highway, originally making expansion and transportation, easy via road or waterway. The communities first name was decided from our towns decommissioned paper mill owner, William Cottingham and inherently named the village Williamstown.

We are often told that it’s ok to be different. My younger version would definitely agree. Growing up Indian, I had the benefit of teachers repeating instructions a bit louder and slower. I never worried about getting injured on the baseball field, because I got to sit on the bench. My parents never had to worry about driving me to sleepovers, though I was seemingly friends with everyone in school.
I believe that our separation from the natural world and the belief that humans are in some way above it all or superior, has led to the crisis of health and environmental degradation that we are now experiencing. We all need to eat, and our diets traditionally have been deeply connected to our region, culture, and food especially in its simplest form can bring great happiness. I love to cook, to share food, to have the taste of a truly perfect bite of something on my tongue, and to feel full and then strong because of it. I love sugar rushes, growing vegetables, cleaning fish, caffeine highs, the lightheadedness after a great cocktail, and I appreciate all of these things all the more because of everything that goes into making them possible. Many of the things that we eat are taken for grated, or convenience is chosen over health.
In my own world, I have learned that I'm not the same person that I used to be. Before, my world view used to be boring, but after I came to Canada my life has changed into a better one. For example, In the past, I used to know only about my religion, which is Islam, but Canada taught me about the other religions in our world and how I have to respect them and treat them in a respectful way. After I read the first nine chapters of The Indian Horse novel, I learned that Indigenous people are also referred to as Aboriginal people and that Indigenous people have been in Canada since time immemorial. Also, I'm wondering how each indigenous culture is distinct and unique.
