Interest Essay We have talked quite a bit in class about language and identity, and while learning and discussing different topics, I found myself being intrigued by ASL in music and then thinking about sign language in general. I have always had an interest in sign language, even prior to taking this class. Foreign languages seemed like such a strange concept to me when I was little, and I had taken interest in them and how unusual they sounded to my English-speaking ears. Even though I had only seen sign language in action, since it is a nonverbal language, it was no exception to my fascination. The people it affects the most is the ones who use it, deaf people. Extending from there, family members and friends of deaf people also use sign language as means for communication. That is a decent part of the population who find an important use for sign language. Sign language interpreters are also quite common and help those who are deaf to understand when someone who does not know sign language is trying to communicate. With enough people to prove its importance, this interest is shared with many more people than just myself. This class showed me that concerts can have sign language interpreters, along with talk shows and most other events. Not only is sign language helpful for people who have hearing problems but can also be used in numerous occasions. For example, if you are somewhere where it is too loud to talk, sign language can be used to communicate. Or if the opposite is true and you are somewhere quiet where you cannot speak, then sign language can come in handy.
