My Management Philosophy

In my first grade ESL classroom I have put my own management plan in place in order to set a basis for mutual respect amongst my students and myself. I am a firm believer of respect isn’t just given, it is earned and I have worked extremely hard to ensure that my students understand that I am available to help them succeed, not to anger or embarrass them. On my first days teaching, I to set up my own version of “first days of school” system in which I let my students know a little about me and set the tone for the next eight weeks. Firstly, I believe yelling is a counterproductive response to negative student behaviors. Especially when students are this young (6-7 year olds), so I decided to implement gentler strategies in order to signal them to settle down, grab and keep their attention, get in a single file line, and isolated student behaviors. I have also adopted some of my cooperating teacher’s strategies such as the one, two, three method signaling students to get out of their chairs, push them in, and come to the carpet for reading time. I have also implemented voice numbers. These are numbers that coincide with voice decibel levels. Voice one is a whisper, voice two is low talking, and voice three is talking at a normal tone. When I feel like my class is getting a little chatty and the only way to get them to hear me is to yell, I clap in a rhythmic tone until all of my student catch on, reconvene and we can get back on …show more content…

A huge part of this includes identifying the mindset your students are in and fostering of a growth- mindset. Growth- mindset is what is going to propel them forward in their studies, class work, extra curricular activities, and their lives. Growth-mindset is the answer to so many people's problems, including teachers and students; motivation, confidence, success all can be achieved with a healthy mindset. Growth mind-set one of the cornerstones of my philosophy of education as it extends to life outside of the classroom and is an essential life skill that should be nurtured within the school
