Growing up knowing two different languages can be difficult for many Latinos, or anyone of a different descent. Her father seemed to be strict with her when deciding what language she can or cannot speak. To me, culture consists of the beliefs, customs, and lifestyles that a group of people or a society shares. Culture is important because it defines who we are, it identifies us with a group of people, and it creates a bond between otherwise unrelated people. For bilinguals, education normally starts off as a challenging time when little English is spoken in their home. Rodriguez, a first generation Mexican American, had a limited exposure to English because Spanish was entirely spoken together with his family. Therefore, he considered it to be his private language because he felt most comfortable and confident using it. Due to Richard’s insufficient practice with English, he suffered developing and speaking with others outside of his household. As a result, Rodriguez’s parents took awareness and encouraged him to speak in English at home.

Culture isn’t something you are born with. It is learned through communication and observation of parents, siblings, and other people who have had an influence on your life. Culture is also shared. This means that it’s a learning experience.

What is Culture? Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary defines culture as, “the customary beliefs, social forms, and material traits of a racial, religious, or social group” (Merriam-Webster, 2018). There are many different ways to explain the characteristics of culture. Culture can mean many different things to people around the world, but I deduce the characteristics to be: values, social norms, and traditions, along with religious and personal beliefs.
