After reading and reviewing the assigned reading, many elements of the documents aligned with my professional and academic goals. I still consider myself relatively new to nursing. For the last two and half years, I have worked as a staff nurse working with high risk patients. We focus on delivering quality care to expectant and postpartum mothers with serious medical conditions. While working on this unit, I have developed an interest in maternal health before, during, and after pregnancy. My decision to start my nursing career at my present employer was influenced by their history of commitment to the health and well-being of the metro Detroit community. I was encouraged to read about Walden’s history and commitment to their students. To achieve my professional goal of obtaining an advanced degree Walden seems to have the right fit. Walden’s vision, mission, and goals are inspiring as well as visionary. Two goals of the University that really resonated with me from the website were, “To provide an inquiry/action model of education that fosters research, discovery, and critical thinking and that results in professional excellence and To produce graduates who are scholarly, reflective practitioners and agents of positive social change” (Vision,Mission, and Goals, 2011). As a future Advanced Public Health Nurse, an advanced degree from Walden will give me the tools and skills to advocate and improve the health outcomes of the population I currently serve. To look beyond the basics and expand my knowledge and thought process.
