English 1010 Assignments Boost My Reading and Writing Skills By tackling the five assignments of English 1010, I learned several important concepts. From the Literacy Narrative assignment, I learned how to use the Show, Don't Tell principle. The Rhetorical Analysis assignment enabled me to learn how to evaluate content for the ethos, pathos and logos components. Thanks to the Non-Academic Discourse assignment, I learned how to treasure non-academic discourse.
Obstacles Numerous people stumble upon obstacles, but only a few can overcome them. Most obstacles are influenced by the values of the society. In The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, Liesel Meminger overcomes her lack of education and her different beliefs on Jewish people. In Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet both overcome the obstacle of not being able to be together because of the feud between their families. In “The House on Mango Street” by Sandra Cisneros, Esperanza overcomes the obstacle of not fitting into her society because of her lack of money.
Living in Conditions that Ultimately Made Them Stronger John Quincy Adams once stated, “patience and perseverance have a magical effect before which difficulties disappear and obstacles vanish.” In the world today, obstacles have an impact on the way one goes about their respective life. These obstacles range from emotions to illness to social class. How one interprets those obstacles decides whether that life goes down as a success or failure. As a society, we often admire those who take their obstacles and use them to create a better life.

This essay will show the obstacles that people face while facing adversity, the factors to overcome adversity, and the greatest factor to overcome adversity. Firstly, there are many obstacles that people face while facing adversity. It could be physical like a broken arm or mental like the mental pain after the loss of a loved one. In the book, “Letters From Rifka”, Rifka faces many obstacles. She got ringworm, which prevented her from going to America.
Obstacles can be challenging, and difficult, but people can overcome them by never giving up, always trying their best, and surrounding themselves with families and friends. Two stories that I have read that show adversity are “A Work in Progress” by Aimee Mullins which is about a little girl losing her leg. The other story I read is “So Far From the Bamboo Grove” by Yoko Kawashima Watkins about a little girl that has to leave her home because of war and has very big obstacles to overcome. Aimee Mullins and the Kawashimas both face obstacles that include losing family members, walking very far in intense weather, and people doubting you and trying to stop you. In the end they all make it through the the challenges mentally and physically.
“Do you even speak English,” a gringo asked me. “No, yo no hablo ingles”, 13-year old me responded. I am from the Dominican Republic and I have been living in the United States for four years. When I came to the States, I was only 13 years old. My journey was definitely not an easy one.
In my future, I hope to continue the skills I have acquired during this English class. I think that they will be very obliging to me, nevertheless of what I am trying to achieve. In this course, I was encountered with deadlines, instructions, and assignments that I could not work around. I found that all of these responsibilities have made me comprehend that I could definitely take the next step forward in life.
I originally thought it was all just writing papers to improve our skills rather than do exercises that actually help us. I think this class gave me a great foundation to build off of in the future and to fine tune my writing skills in college and the future. I think this class for me has really opened my eyes to how lazy of a writer I was because I didn 't take the time or put the effort in. During this class I have improved in countless ways that will be needed to be successful in the next level of education. Coming into contact with challenges and struggles can seem awful and unwanted at first. But as we get around those struggles and challenges we can look back and be grateful we went through them. Sometimes we can face something so scary it feels as though we will never get through that stage but when we do that person will be so much stronger because they had to go face to face with what scared them. Challenges are bumps in an individual 's road to success, some may appear bigger than others but perseverance can and will help a person to get over those bumps. The more challenges someone gets past helps them get closer to their goals in life.
At the start of this course I could barely write a coherent paragraph. I believe that I can now write a passable academic essay. I have grown much more confident in my writing skills. This class has been exceptionally helpful in teaching me how to write properly. I believe that I have gained a lot of useful information from this class.

These obstacles can range from your school work to the death of a loved one. Everyone faces obstacles and challenges, some overcome them and some get overcome by the obstacles.
In 1991 Norman Garmezy developed a theoretical framework for resiliency. Garmezy (1991) proposed three types of protective factors that make up his theoretical framework, which includes individual characteristics of the individual, a close-knit relationship with the family and lastly, social support and structure outside their immediate family. The primary factor in developing resiliency relates to the person's intelligence and character, and Garmezy (1991) states that resilient youth have above average intelligence. Garmezy (1991) defines the second factor in developing resiliency as one that includes the support of family to help with difficult conditions. The third common factor of resilient youth is external support from institutions (Garmezy, 1991).
