My Reflection: My Baycrest Clinical Experience

I feel quite blessed for giving me the opportunity to be part of Baycrest in enhancing my learning this semester. I was waitlisted for this placement. I wasn 't able to enjoy my holidays because my placement was not confirmed. I was thinking that what I would do if I had no place to go this semester. It would mean that my learning could be prolonged for another semester. During the holidays, I waited every signal day to hear from Michelle. I wasn 't at peace. I truly prayed hard during the holidays. I didn 't care where I would get the placement, I just wanted to have a place to go for this semester. My strength I would say would be I love interacting with people, that’s why I had chosen this profession. I could never imagine myself sitting in front of a computer or sitting in an office. When I think about talent, I have not yet discovered that aspect of my life, it might be because I believe the work I do for living is quiet opposite to the career path that I had chosen and so I wasn’t able to make any comparison between the two profession. My goal for this semester is to care for my patients holistically. I have read that majority of the patients at site are Jewish survivors of Holocaust, and how they can be quite sensitive. I have read that activities of daily living such as shower, bathing, personal care may trigger painful and difficult memories of the Holocaust. Loud noises, sirens, shouting, fire alarms, uniforms, group activities, lining up, meal times, food portioning, medical tests, treatments and illnesses can also be potential trigger of those painful and difficult memories. Therefore, I want to be mindful of the care that I provide for my patient and acknowledge the trigger that may cause them pain. The unit is known as complex continuing care. They provide care for the elderly population over the age of 60 and over whom have complex medical conditions. Through this unit assessment, treatment and care for patients with multiple chronic complex medical conditions are provided. Inter professional team helps patient in managing complex medical conditions and provide end of life care for terminal medical conditions through meeting physical, emotional, social and spiritual well-being of oneself. This unit is not a home for permanent stay or a long term care program. Inter professional teams continually will assess patients to ensure that the person is in the appropriate level of care. Inter professional team will assist the patient and their family in preparation for transition or discharge to the most appropriate care setting for the patient.
