The core concept of effective teaching can be described as being based upon a foundation of understanding (Killen, 2012). An effective teacher is one who ensures understanding is met by managing learning opportunities, placing emphasis on cultural, social and emotional development and emphasising the importance self-esteem and identity (Cremin & Arthur, 2014). My specialisation within the Master of Teaching is in primary education, so socialisation is an important element in the role of the teacher . Children need to learn how to function in an environment larger than their home and understand the norms of society (Cremin & Arthur, 2014). This process helps unearth our assumptions, and ensures that these assumptions do not impact negatively upon ourselves as a teacher. Brookfield (1995) found that viewing ourselves through four distinct ‘lenses’ helps recognise incomplete or distorted assumptions that would otherwise go unnoticed, and allows us to take steps to improve them. Reflective practice enables understanding of the rationale that underlies our teaching methods, therefore allowing us to develop and communicate them effectively (Brookfield, 1995). By delving deeper into reflection, we also discover larger notions such as power, hegemony and social justice that we were not aware of previously (Brookfield, 1995). Brookfield’s four lenses of reflection can be used to guide reflective practice of our teaching and uncover underlying assumptions stemming from our values and beliefs. The four lenses we will discuss are; the autobiographical lens, students’ eyes, colleagues’ experiences and theoretical literature.
