Western Washington has a diverse and well trained group of writing centers. I was fortunate enough to be able to visit Central Washington University, Highline Community College, Shoreline Community College, Tacoma Community College and University of Washington Bothell . The goal was to find out what the writing centers are using for training, and how the centers operated. The four centers I visited, and the one center I interviewed, were extremely welcoming and have a diverse variety of extensive training programs. Observations of these writing centers enlightened me with an overwhelming amount of information.
Emergent self-knowledge of personal writing influences how approaches will be taken to develop writing skills in students. Utilisation of a writer’s journal enables emerging writers to understand relationships between the purpose of a journal activity and the intended audience (Bishop, 1996, p.34). Acknowledgement of self-emergence as a writer enables the author to include additional information into their work for clarity of the text, therefore enhancing that knowledge attained, ensuring the writer understands the importance of skills associated with writing polished pieces of writing. It is important for educators to have a refined understanding of language and how it works. Research shows the more understanding an educator has on developing writing skills in their students, the task involved will become less complicated, resulting in meaningful learning experiences for students (Loane & Muir, 2017, p. xviii).
For instance, when working at OSU’s Study and Teaching of Writing (CSTW), in order to offer effective writing feedback, I always inquired students’ past challenges of learning English writing and areas they sought to improve during writing consultations. Furthermore, I utilized different tutoring and teaching strategies during consultations, training, and writing groups geared towards differentiated instruction. These strategies include adopting different types of learning activities, integrating technology into instruction, and collaborating with other instructors. When training undergraduate and graduate student tutors, I cultivated students’ critical thinking by incorporating required readings with different perspectives.
What actions can a concerned student take to improve his or her writing skills? We all know the term of study and learn in general. This is a life length of process which has being involved in everyone’s life in our life time. Everyone has his/her own prodigy to choose what he/she wants to do at the present and to be in the future.

My ultimate goal has always revolved around English. More accurately, it has revolved around literature and the writing process. Anyone who has ventured into the mess that is my bedroom can see that I love books—I own over two-hundred them, ranging in authorship from Homer and Shakespeare to Orwell and Rand—but what many people do not know is that I love to write just as much as I love to read, perhaps even more so. Thus, while it is true that I have always known I would be attending OBU in pursuit of an English degree, it was not until I actually began my college career that I expounded upon my writer-oriented goals.
These approaches derive from my personal learning experience as an English Language Learner (ELL) and international student in the US, work experience at the OSU’s CSTW where I had numerous opportunities to teach and provide writing feedback to domestic and international undergraduate, Master’s, and doctoral students, post-docs, and visiting scholars. Writing genres covered college compositions, research papers, multimodal texts, conference papers and posters, Master’s theses, dissertations, academic journal articles, grant proposals, job required materials, and multimodal texts (e.g., websites, PowerPoint slides, and video clips). Types of writing consultations contained face-to-face, synchronous, and asynchronous consultations and semester-long writing groups. Knowing about students’ learning backgrounds and needs enable me to understand academic writing difficulties they encountered in the past, foresee possible writing difficulties in their present learning settings, and know their learning needs and teaching methods that I could adopt to motivate and effectively teach them. Then, teaching lessons are designed based on this information to effectively enhance their academic competence.
Throughout the college writing course, there were four major projects to focus on. These include an annotated bibliography, research argument, collaborative letter and presentation, and reflective portfolio. My writing goals for the course consisted of starting early on assignments and using stronger word choices. These goals relate to being a business major because there will be projects and papers that I will need to spend a good chunk of time on. Starting early on these as well as using strong words will hopefully allow me to succeed.
As a college level writer, my goal is to improve my grammar, while also becoming a more fluent writer. I want my work to flourish, steadily easing into the next sentence or paragraph perfectly. Grammar is difficult, however it is a necessity in today’s era. As my journey as a college student excels within the next four years, my grammar skills will sky-rocket along with it. (Not to mention, my grammar will too.)
Reflection One of my writing goals for this semester was to be more confident in my writing, and I think I have achieved that goal. I’m not only more confident with my final papers, but I am also more comfortable with writing in general. This class also made me more comfortable sharing my work and my thoughts and ideas with others. It used to take me a long time to come up with ideas, but getting more practice has definitely helped.
Being invited to the first Policy Planning course in the Middle East organized by the World Health Organization in 2010 opened my eyes to the world of public health. The broad scope of topics that fall into this field excited me as I see many opportunities that have the potential to benefit my country in terms of conducting research relevant to national and regional health challenges, engaging in public health interventions, fostering health studies so as to promote health literacy throughout the population, and advocating policies to protect and promote health. With all my education and community experiences I found a major deficit in health knowledge in all sectors of Kuwait which I have tried to fulfill. However with the lack of this knowledge coupled with the lack of health management and policies in the country has lead us to become leaders in obesity, diabetes and other non communicable diseases which is placing a financial burden on our country.
Abstract Writing is a very important skill that needs to be taught, developed and assessed for elementary graders. For each of the learning skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing), there are many ways and strategies that educators can use to develop their students’ learning. In this study, I'm targeting to pay teachers' attention to learn more about (6+1 Traits Writing Strategies) which are: (Ideas, Organization, Voice, Word Choice, Sentence Fluency, Conventions, and Presentation). Using traits in ESL elementary classrooms will encourage students to write better and will provide them with remarkable writing experiences. Writing has always been an issue but yet interesting subject of mine. As hard as I try and write essays, and papers I just can’t get the hang of writing. But after taking this class, I did learn different writing technique and improved my writing proficiency, material body of formatting, and how to uncovering and properly use sources. Through class exams, essays, and a research paper, I was able to learn new writing skills. Although I have learned a variety of things, my writing still needs improvement.
Towards becoming a writer -------------------------------- I promised myself that I will learn a new skill this year. I resolve to learn how to write with purpose.
When I graduate high school, I plan on having future goals that I plan on achieving. My first goal is to go to college and get a degree. I plan on attending Purdue NorthWest majoring in engineering and minoring in business. This is my number one future goal that I need to accomplish because to be able to have a nice life, I need to go to college to support my future family. My next future goal would be get a starting job to be able to support my future family.
