Brad Bushman and Roy Baumeister researched the whether violence was a result of low self-esteem or threatened egotism. Their main hypothesis before their experiment was that combination of narcissism and the feeling of a threatened ego would result in responses with high levels of violence and aggression (Ego). Traditionally in psychology it was agreed that low self-esteem lead to aggression. To conclude their hypothesis in comparison to psychologies traditional understandings they created two studies to compare the results (Ego). The study they conducted would test there main hypothesis of how threatened egotism would create aggression. The participants chosen for this study were two-hundred and sixty undergraduate psychology students (half men and half women) who would receive extra credit for their participation in the study (Ego). In this study they exposed …show more content…
The participants only consisted of participants taking psychology courses and seeking extra credit for there course (Ego). There also did not seem to be much explanation on how low-self esteem played into aggression. The participants also could have been more to have high egotism because they were willing to earn extra credit (Ego). Individuals having a desire to get this and be more competitive
could show them as being more narcissistic, seeing as how narcissist think highly off themselves and perhaps feel like they deserve it. Psychology is the scientific study of the human mind, and how and why it does the things it does (Ego). It is very important for psychologist to understand factors such as violence and its cause. It helps develop a better understanding of our minds and the behaviors we exhibit based on the world around us (Ego). The experiment may have had some slight issues in its research, but it overall did prove successful in showing how egotism and narcissism resulted in higher violence and aggression levels in individuals
