On December 2003, I had just turned four years old, and my entire family decided to move across the country to America from India. Before I was born, my father immigrated to America because we were experiencing financial instability and for the enhancement of our future. My father wanted to improve his family’s future by providing them with the opportunity to gain a vigorous education, and ensure financial stability. When I first reached America I did not know much English, but as I attended school I got better at speaking and writing it. The population of India in 1997 was 997 million people and it was growing at a 1.7 percent annual growth rate, which is very high compared to other countries data. Another problem was that due to the high population there were not enough jobs for everyone, resulting in high unemployment and increasing poverty levels (Adlakha, 2). India was a very young nation at this time, it had only been 50 years since it gained its independence from Great Britain, so it was still inputting some basic infrastructure like: healthcare, educational system, and configurations of states and territories throughout the country. My father described to me the living conditions he was facing due to this population crisis growing. The apartment complex which he was raised in was very rural from a physical perspective. The houses eroded down and dirty, the roof had holes, and the ceiling of the house was swarming with flies. A single, dim light bulb hung from the ceiling. The house was very small, and served as a sleeping room, kitchen, and living room for six family members. The living conditions which my father grew up in, is an environment that I cannot even imagine stepping into, because I have grown up in a two story five-bedroom air conditioned home spanning over 4300 square feet, with an enormous backyard, out in the suburbs of Houston for just four people.
