Samuel Seium. The summer after I finished high school, my first job was at Macy’s because I knew that they would give me the flexibility to come back during the winter and summer breaks from college. My father said that he knew someone that worked there that could get me hired. I attended Virginia State University (VSU) to study Criminal Justice because I was considering being a lawyer or working with teenagers. I learned about this school from a tour that my high school provided and I liked it because it was close to home and had a lot of history. VSU was the only school that I applied to and it was the best decision that I made because I enjoyed the people and the school environment. After my sophomore year, I quit Macy’s to work at a Lexus dealership as a valet because they paid three dollars more than Macy’s. My friend who worked there informed me that the Lexus dealership was hiring and he would put in a good word for me. I applied for a position as a full-time counselor working with individuals with intellectual disabilities. I finally had a success and received the full-time job that I was looking for but I was not satisfied. After a year, I would apply for higher positions at IDS but my boss told me that I needed a masters degree if I wanted to get a higher position. Three weeks later, I applied to George Mason University to enroll into their Counseling and Development Program. I picked this program because after undergrad all I did was work as a counselor and I liked it and knew I would be happy if I continued this journey.
