Scott McCloud explains that there is a difference between comics and cartoons. He defines comics as a series of juxtaposed images in a sequence to deliver a message (McCloud 9). He defines cartoons as a single panel sketch or drawing, that may be a style and humorous (21). This report will summarize and support his analysis of how comics differ from cartoons. This will be done by selecting a section from his book, Understanding Comics, and by explaining the South Rose Window of Chartres Cathedral image from the Gothic Period.
McCloud states that the history of comics, which tells a story, began in 1519 by Cortés’s manuscript where images shown from right to left described what happened to him and his military. McCloud’s research shows that comics were used by the …show more content…

Christ is in the center of the window surrounded by four rings. The first ring of angels surrounds Christ along with four evangelists, which are beasts. One beast is the lion who represents Mark and means strength and boldness. The second beast is a calf or ox who represents Luke and means diligence and patience. The third beast is the face of man who represents Matthews and reflects all the aspects of the other three beasts. The fourth beast is an eagle who represents John and means quickness and good. The two outer rings each have twelve circles that show the twenty-four elders of the apocalypse. The form of this image has each character in a round circle and as part of an entire circle. The main colors used are gold, blue, and red. The texture of the window is smooth. The narrative of the entire series of pictures symbolizes Christ’s triumphant who is raining over heaven and is surrounded by all of his witnesses on
