In many comic book worlds, violence and crimes overwhelms the streets of where the superheroes resides. To live in a world of never-ending violence is often the start of when people lose hope for a better future. The culture of violence has been a problem in our world today, ranging from violent entertainment such as television shows, rap music, and video games to school massacres where many children are killed as the outcome of a person’s anger. Many of these events are triggered by the overreaction or outburst of an unstable individual, such as in the cases of the Columbine High School and the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. A totalitarian rule is defined as a centralized government that does not tolerate parties of differing opinion and exercises dictorial control over the aspects of life. There are many examples of dictators known in the world. In the article Killings on Campus by Neal Gabler, it is mentioned that teenagers “worshiped Adolf Hitler, loved Goth music had a special fondness for Marilyn Manson, the mordant rockstar whose satanic persona is designed to scandalize parents of his fans” (Gabler EP 87). Gabler refers to a dictator who took the lives of many people which shows the wrath of a totalitarian ruler. Hitler was the leader who killed a mass number of people, and who supported violence and cause chaos in the world. Teenagers today usually listen to these kinds of songs and movies, and are influenced by the content of the media. The 1949 novel Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell, “...has become famous for its portrayal of pervasive government surveillance and control, and government's increasing encroachment on the rights of the individual” (Nineteen Eighty Four e.p. 1). In a totalitarian government, civilians are not allowed to have their own thoughts and must follow the government’s rules and ways of thinking. Although this book was published a long time ago in 1996, the issues of the culture of violence through dystopia, desensitization and totalitarian rule still exists in the world today. For example, distrust of the government and politics in which two or more countries go into a war with each other still exists, which shows the acts of dystopia and desensitization to violence. Furthermore, some countries such as North Korea and China still have a totalitarian ruler in which one person or group rules the country. Kingdom Come also shows that the problems of violent culture and dystopia are not easily solved and that it has been going on for a long time. Although the media stations have become better at censoring these violent influences, there are still some shows and games that should not be played by young individuals. Because of this, the events in Kingdom Come portray the culture of violence and dystopia through the desensitization of violence and a totalitarian government in which the events are still currently happening
