Former First Lady of the United States of America, Michelle Obama, once stated that “it comes to social media, there are just times I turn off the world, you know. There are just sometimes you have to give yourself space to be quiet, which means you've got to set those phones down.” In her words, she directs the society of how social media distracts society from reality. Social media has caused a great deal of controversy over the years. About 81% of the population of American citizens have a social media profile and actively post. People that use social media are at a very high risk of physical and emotional damage. Considering social media users are always watching for reactions out of others, based off of their actions on their accounts. To begin with, one of the most concerning dangers of social media is catfishing. Catfishing is the act of creating a false identity for oneself in order to manipulate, or physically injure another person. Online predators use catfishing as a motive for their own satisfaction. They use social media to create false identities. Unfortunately, catfishing mainly leads to negative outcomes. The after-result of catfishing can lead to financial crimes, sexual assaults, and mental or physical abuse. Research by Tufts University suggests that “catfishing endangers your health by stripping away your anonymity and putting your mental and physical well-being at risk of being abused.’’ (Tufts University 1).
